Comparing with others

As a survivor, you will not only find yourself comparing your situation to someone who has suffered more than you. You may also find yourself feeling resentment because someone is not suffering as much as you are. “Why them and not us?”  “Why did we lose our home and they did not?”  “Why did we lose a family member and they did not?” “Why am I  injured and she not when we were at the same place?”

Peter experienced a similar emotion. During the same conversation mentioned in the last insight in John 21, Jesus told Peter that his life would end.  
Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.” John 21:18-19

Immediately, Peter wanted to know if the apostle John would also suffer like him.  And if not, why not? 
When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” John 21:21-22

God’s response was similar to his conversation in dealing with Peter’s guilt. “What I decide is my concern. Your concern is to follow me.”
Just like Peter, a survivor may ask “Why” questions in comparing his or her situation to others. Jesus made it clear that we will find peace in our hearts when we stop asking “why” and instead focus on “What God has planned for us”. There are many things God in his wisdom will not reveal to us. Christ’s solution for us to deal with survivor’s guilt is to focus on doing His will.
