SWIRLS OF NURTURE

Sometimes I feel like a creator, sometimes I feel like a teacher,  sometimes I feel like a worshipper,
sometimes I just feel three worlds swirling, colliding, morphing into new worlds . .
. . . yet with each swirl the need to nurture . . .
. . . nurture midst fragile creations, vulnerable artists, emotive questioning soundscapes, wondering and wandering thoughts, midst a church wondering how to create in the image of the One who created all.

The Importance of Art in Trauma Recovery

Don’t try to pressure your child into talking. We have already mentioned the value of listening to their play. Another helpful idea is to give children the opportunity to colour or draw. The goal is not to specifically ask your child to draw or write about the event or their feelings. You can simply let them draw what they would like.  If you need some ideas you can start by asking your child to draw or write  about:
    1) what they’re feeling today
    2) something they dream of
    3) what they want to be when they grow up
    4) a fantasy like their best garden or the perfect vacation
    5)  a person who is there for them and makes them feel comfortable.

Children, especially very young ones have limited verbal communication but can express important feelings, anger and fear through the use of colour and even crude shapes.

Even things that have no direct connection to traumatic events will help your child express their emotions and desires. In a sensitive caring manner, affirm what they are doing and ask them to explain to you what they created and why. Often you will gain helpful insight into their emotional journey.  This knowledge will help you to know what to say and do.
